Easter also known as the “Resurrection day” (also known as “Pascha”) is by far the most important Christian festival after Christmas. It is believed that Jesus Christ was resurrected on this day i.e. on the third day after his death by resurrection. This festival lies in the Christian liturgical year and is celebrated in honor of Jesus Christ’s resurrection. Easter also refers to the season of the church which in turn is also known as the “Eastertide” or “Easter season”. The Easter season includes the Easter day itself and few days before and after it. The season usually is for about forty to fifty days.
The day on which Easter is celebrated is not fixed it varies from year to year. This is with respect to the civil calendar. This has brought up various controversies several time in the past in the Christian religion. The reason clearly is the relation between Easter and the Jewish Passover festival. The Passover meal is the same as the last supper and the date of the Passover meal is determined by using the lunar calendar. The simple rule followed to determine the date is described as “Easter is observed on the Sunday after the first full moon on or after the day of the vernal equinox”. This ss considered a simplification, but still now the matter has not been fully resolved as both the eastern and western churches use different calendars Georgian and Julian respectively.
Though Easter has become a secular holiday, it should be noted that Easter has its origins in Christianity. So most western countries declare holidays around Easter. This gives all family and friends a good reason and time to get together i.e. both Christian and non Christian. Children enjoy having sweets namely chocolate eggs and other treats at this time of the year, but emphasis is also laid on teaching children about their religious tradition and inculcating faith in them. This can be done by telling them about the history behind the holiday.
